When Hungary introduced a new nationwide return system for reusable bottles, colleagues in Komárom saw an opportunity to create broader impact. As part of the #BuildingHealthierCommunities program, they decided to collect and return bottles to support both environmental goals and local philanthropic causes.
In Q1 2025, the team collected 1350 EUR through continuous bottle returns. Every quarter, colleagues suggest local causes or individuals to support. A managing committee of employees selects three options, and colleagues then vote to decide where the funds are donated. A large majority of employees took part in the first vote.
This quarter’s donation supported the development of a baby boy born to two Komárom colleagues with a developmental disorder.
“Our goal was to create a simple, ongoing way to support both sustainability and the community around us,” said a member of the Komárom project team. “It shows what we can achieve when small actions are linked to a common purpose.”
The initiative is fully employee-driven, with colleagues volunteering around 70 hours each quarter to manage the project, communicate internally and coordinate the donations. Through #BuildingHealthierCommunities, Viatris colleagues are helping connect sustainability, solidarity, and everyday action across Europe.
